Bachelor watching “The Bachelor”: The Premiere

My last experience with “The Bachelor” was its last finale about a year ago (like most heterosexual men, I have no interest in  “The Bachelorette” or any of the other sister shows). While living at home I always ate dinner with my mom as a thank-you for making it. Every Monday this would mean she was eating in front of the TV watching the show. After moving into an apartment with complete strangers, I was surprised to find one of them watching the finale where Ben, the winemaker chose Courtney, the model.  A choice which, like America, we knew was wrong but as men at least one of us would’ve made.

This week I was invited to watch the opening show with my neighbors  across the street – three girls and their friend. I had forgotten about the college football championship that aired at the same time but given my distaste for both of the involved parties and the eventual outcome, I didn’t miss out on anything.

The discussing a reality show with others is three quarters the experience of watching said show so I’ve decided to recap some of these discussions for this first recap.

“If I were a producer on the show” –  This is my favorite Bachelor related discussion, partially because I have the best idea for the show. Two guys, one good and one bad where the women can play either guy, even if they only have feelings for the other. The other idea kicked around that evening – and likely the most popular – is having host Chris Harrison as the main contestant. While a reality game show version of Hitch would be a huge hit, Harrison is probably put off from seeing the behind the scenes process.

Why is Sean prepping strawberries for his coaching session with Arie? I have never hung out  with the guys and thought “I wish we had a strawberry platter.” We couldn’t go with a shot of him putting a six pack of Bud Light Platinum in the fridge? They actually have beer during the scene. During this sequence the ladies in the room also said a video series of Bachelor-esque men having a PG make-out sessions would do very well.

Giving the first rose away upon meeting Tierra was a brilliant move in that it saved the likeability of the rest of the new women. I stress the “new” because the surprise contestant, Kacie B. who is one of the most likeable contestants on the show – she’s probably the next Bachelorette, just because – automatically had a target on her back. Having another girl walk in “chosen” took some of the heat off Kacie who we’re all-in on from the start.

I have to give props to Amanda for making the unintentional reference to one of my favorite movies, Annie Hall by awkwardly getting the initial “awkward moment” out of the way.

The discussions fell off beyond this point which was in large part due to the unorthodox method of rose distribution. Sean gave a few more roses. Speaking of the roses, I understand that it sucks to have to wait to the ceremony to get a rose but the number of roses stayed the same. If you play the numbers game in the early rounds, you’ll  go far.

  1. Yeah I know for a fact your “friends” are addicted to that show. Also it’s a show base around woman and for woman that are teaching them; That if a man you like doesn’t pick you your love life is doomed, promotes woman to “compete” for a man they barely know, also shows woman “heartbroken” when they are not picked (which I feel is demeaning to the gender).
